There is something wonderful about reaching a stage of life where you begin to realise that looking after yourself is not selfish. For many women, the years before 50 can be filled with caring for children, supporting family, building a career, managing a household and trying to keep everything running smoothly. Somewhere along the way, your own needs can quietly move down the list.
Then life changes, and you may suddenly find yourself with a little more space to ask a very important question: How am I actually doing?
The answer might be that you are ready for a change. Perhaps you want more energy, better routines, more time to yourself or simply a greater sense of calm.
The Wellness and Self-Care challenges at 2nd Chapter Moments are designed as gentle invitations to pause, reconnect with yourself and discover small ways to make everyday life feel better.
The phrase "self-care" can sometimes sound like another item on an already endless to-do list. It can conjure up images of expensive spa treatments, elaborate morning routines or hours of uninterrupted free time.
But genuine self-care can be much simpler. It might be going to bed a little earlier, taking a walk, drinking more water, making time for something you enjoy, turning off your phone for an hour or finally booking an appointment you've been putting off. It is about recognising that your wellbeing matters.
You don't need to earn rest, and you don't need to wait until everything else is finished before you look after yourself. In this next chapter of life, self-care can become less about occasional treats and more about creating everyday habits that support how you want to feel.
One of the most useful things about this stage of life is that you may know yourself better than ever. You have probably discovered which people energise you, which situations drain you and which activities make you feel genuinely happy.
But life can become so routine that you stop noticing those things. A wellness challenge can encourage you to pay attention again.
What makes you feel calm?
What gives you energy?
When do you feel most like yourself?
Do you enjoy being outside, moving your body, cooking, reading, listening to music, being creative or spending time with friends?
There doesn't have to be one perfect answer. Wellness is personal, and discovering what works for you is part of the journey.
You don't need to completely transform your lifestyle on Monday morning. In fact, making too many changes at once can leave you feeling overwhelmed before you've even started.
A better approach is to choose one small thing and give it some attention. Perhaps you take a short walk each day, create a relaxing evening routine or spend ten minutes doing something you enjoy.
Once that becomes comfortable, you can decide whether you want to build on it. Small changes may not feel dramatic, but they can have a cumulative effect. One healthier choice can lead to another.
One positive habit can make the next one easier. Over time, these small moments can create a routine that feels more supportive without becoming another source of pressure.
Exercise can become a loaded subject as we get older. There can be pressure to lose weight, maintain a certain appearance or follow increasingly complicated fitness routines. But movement doesn't have to be about any of those things.
It can simply be about feeling stronger, more mobile and more comfortable in your body. Walking, swimming, gardening, stretching, dancing, cycling or strength exercises can all be ways to enjoy movement.
The most useful activity is often the one you actually enjoy enough to keep doing. Instead of asking, "What's the best exercise?" perhaps ask, "What kind of movement would I look forward to?"
That small change in perspective can make wellbeing feel much more positive.
Many women are incredibly good at being busy. There is always something that could be cleaned, organised, answered, arranged or completed. But rest is not a reward for finishing everything.
There will always be another task. Giving yourself permission to slow down is an important part of self-care, particularly if you have spent years feeling responsible for everyone around you.
Rest might mean an afternoon with a book, a quiet cup of coffee, an early night, sitting outside or simply doing nothing for a while.
You don't need to justify it. Your body and mind need recovery just as much as they need activity. A slower moment isn't wasted time. Sometimes it is exactly what allows you to feel ready for everything else.
Wellness isn't only about physical health. Your emotional and mental wellbeing deserve attention too.
Life can bring significant changes after 50, including children leaving home, retirement, career changes, relationship changes, caring responsibilities and shifting friendships. Even positive changes can take adjustment.
Give yourself permission to acknowledge how you feel rather than assuming you should simply get on with things. Journalling, spending time with people you trust, getting outside, practising mindfulness or finding a new creative outlet can all provide opportunities to slow down and reconnect.
And when something feels difficult or persistent, seeking appropriate professional support is a sign of looking after yourself, not a sign that you have failed.
There is no perfect self-care routine.
What works beautifully for one woman may be completely unrealistic for another. Perhaps you love early mornings while someone else feels most relaxed in the evening.
Maybe a daily gym session sounds wonderful to you, while another woman would much rather walk along the beach or spend time gardening. Your routine doesn't need to look impressive. It needs to fit your life.
The Wellness and Self-Care challenges at 2nd Chapter Moments are there to give you ideas and gentle structure, not to tell you how you should live.
Take what works, adapt what doesn't and leave the rest behind.
Wellness isn't only about fixing problems. It is also about adding things that bring pleasure into your life.
Plan a lunch with a friend.
Try a new recipe.
Visit somewhere you've never been.
Buy the flowers.
Listen to the music you loved years ago.
Take yourself somewhere nice.
Start a book.
Book the weekend away.
Try the class you've been thinking about.
These moments matter because wellbeing is about more than being healthy; it is also about having a life that feels enjoyable and meaningful.
Your second chapter should contain moments that you look forward to, not just responsibilities that you need to get through.
You don't need to become a completely different person to feel better. You may simply need to start paying a little more attention to yourself.
What does your body need?
What does your mind need?
What makes you smile?
What have you been putting off?
What would make your everyday life feel a little easier?
Choose one answer and start there.
The Wellness and Self-Care challenges at 2nd Chapter Moments are designed to help you explore those questions through simple, achievable ideas that encourage you to make yourself part of your own priorities again.
Because wellness isn't about having a perfect life.
It's about creating a life where you feel cared for, connected and able to enjoy the moments that matter.
And sometimes, your next chapter begins with something as simple as taking better care of yourself.
